I live in New York City; we don’t have the luxury of walking outdoors in our pajamas. If we want to go anywhere, we have to bundle up to walk there during the winter. Therefore I was shocked when I saw two people out and about in their pajamas yesterday.
These photos were taken within minutes of each other yesterday at a Dunkin’ Donuts while on the way to my sister’s for Christmas. My husband and I were standing on line to get some breakfast and caffeine and I saw this guy paying for his coffee.
This guy managed to put some minor effort towards putting a coat on, but note the pajama bottoms (with little penguins on them) and Adidas flip flops. I know what a caffeine fix feels like but, dude, put some pants on!
Next, standing right behind him was this girl wearing her house slippers. While they look warm, they’re slippers.
Now, I know that many of us wear UGG Classic Tall boots as outerwear. There are many Australians out there laughing at us for doing that, no doubt. However, at least UGG boots have total coverage. These slippers, possibly also by UGG, are slip in slippers and her bare feet are showing. Is it really that hard to throw on some shoes before leaving the house? Have we become this lazy?
Maybe I’m missing something. Perhaps living in the city has caused me to miss out on some popular trends going on in the suburban areas. Like I said, few of us in a city, who need to walk, have the luxury of keeping out PJ bottoms and slippers on. What do you think? Have we gone another step closer towards absolute slothiness or does this trend make sense to everyone besides me?
just one step closer to the forever lazy.
just one step closer to the forever lazy.
I might step out the back door to take the trash out in pj’s and slippers…and I’ve been known to step briefly onto the front porch while in bathrobe to call one of the kids back to “remember your backpack” or “don’t forget your lunch” before the bus comes. But going in town? Seriously? No way. I’ve seen others do it…not I!
Alas, this is a way of life on military bases around the world. Spouses run into the PX and commissary wearing their pj bottoms, flip flops and a nasty t-shirt. Some moms take their kids to school in the morning wearing pajama bottoms and then pick up the kids later in the day wearing the same pajama bottoms. It has gotten so bad that the General on our base has sent our a courtesy patrol to police up these fashion offenders. I blame Old Navy.
Huge trend among the white trash of the UK and Ireland
Yes! Put on real clothing and look presentable. Is there no more self-respect?
The first time I saw the pajama outdoors thing a few years ago I was shocked. https://bridgetteraes.com/2011/12/26/is-wearing-pajamas-outdoors-a-trend. In NY it’s just not as common because we walk everywhere. Admittedly, I do have a pair of lounge pants I have worn to the corner store but they are not technically pajamas and look more like athleisure, I guess.
One of my biggest pet peeves. When I lived in Idaho briefly I constantly saw people walking around town in pj pants and slippers. Seriously people! How hard is it to put on a pair of jeans before leaving the house? It’s especially disturbing seeing men sport soft pants in public. Not a flattering look!
Ahhh, 2013 and people still can’t understand self expression and respect that others think differently. Reality check: Wearing $3 pajama pants does not make you less of a person than someone that spent $450 and 3 hours getting their outfit. It doesn’t mean you respect yourself any less either. We’re finite beings and NOTHING we do or say really matters – we simply choose what matters to US.
Try being compassionate, and worry about YOURSELF. I see girls women call other woman names because they have a short skirt on, but think nothing of wearing short shorts, cleavage baring shirts or bikinis themselves. So someone wore a comfortable pair of pants outside. Get over it and move on with your day. If YOU think wearing PJ pants outside is disrespectful don’t do it. Realise it’s within the law and their are people that likely disagree with EVERYTHING you think, say or do as well.
I’ve long wanted to put on white socks and sandals, PJ pants, and a shirt using your instead of you’re in public just to get these shallow people going. But I prefer to deal with my own life and let others live theirs.
