It’s fall. This means it’s time to break out the jeans and sweaters. This type of look can be such a default outfit…not that there is anything wrong with this. However, you have to watch the repetition of such fail-safe ensembles. Before you get too entrenched in this look, and get bored, below are five ways to accessorize a sweater and jeans so that you can change up this classic standby to make it feel fresh each time you wear it.
Five Ways to Accessorize a Sweater and Jeans
With the huge variety of sweaters and jeans out there, I kept my choice of styles simple with this v-neck sweater from J. Crew and skinny jeans from Lucky Brand. Undoubtedly, the simpler the base the more options can create. However, you should still be able to glean tips from the looks below to create your own outfits with the jeans and sweater styles you prefer.
Outfit #1
In this first outfit I used this scarf from Nordstrom to not only bring some color towards the face but to also introduce some new shades that can be added as accessories. I styled this outfit with a pair of orange flats from Miz Mooz and fuchsia tote from Lodis accessories. For earrings I used this drop pair Modcloth.
Outfit #2
In this next look I take the colors of this sweater and jeans outfit in a whole different direction using this plaid blazer from J. Crew, cognac booties from Vince Camuto and moss green handbag from Rebecca Minkoff. For jewelry, I added this pendant necklace from Nest. Be sure to have enough slim sweaters on hand so that you can use them to layer under blazers to create additional outfit options.
Outfit #3
Another color direction is set in this look by playing with shades of pink. The jasper necklace by Janna Conner picks up the pink accents which I further use to accessorize using this soft pink Pashmina scarf from Nordstrom and berry colored bag from Aldo. For shoes, I used one of my favorite ballerina flats, the Ellen from Vince Camuto, in a very versatile silver metallic shade.
Outfit #4
You can keep color out of your jeans and sweater outfits and still make them look interesting. With layered necklaces being so popular, you can definitely take one and use it to make your sweater and jeans outfits look less blah with little effort, like I did here with this layered necklace from Bauble Bar. Next, it’s easy to take a daytime sweater and jeans look and add heels to dress it up like I did here with these heeled suede boots from Anthropologie. For a bag, I used this statement style from Coach. It definitely adds something to the outfit but when you put the bag down the outfit still looks great.
Outfit #5
In this last look, I am using a layered necklace again, this one from Stella & Dot, and an autumn staple, a lightweight scarf in grey. In this outfit, I used this backpack from Botkier for a casual look, and used these suede oxfords from Franco Sarto that work well in the fall with ankle length pants and jeans.
Accessorize your sweater and jeans outfits
To avoid boredom with your favorite casual fall looks remember your accessories to change up your outfits and get more with less.
Really relevant stuff – seeing as I just spent the day in an un-inspired sweater and jeans outfit! Must try harder…
great suggestions! I love seeing what you did with the basics. I like all the outfits. Amazing how the purse and shoes add so much.
I can’t believe this post is over a year old! It influenced me so much when you first put it up, especially seeing as I already had a few similar items in my wardrobe that I wasn’t making the most of, such as a brown tweed blazer and a colourful purple & coral scarf. It even inspired me to buy some cute grey oxfords and embrace the backpack trend. My silvery-pewter backpack is still going strong! I love that Stella & Dot Aria pendant so much, I’ve just ordered it in the gold/clear quartz option. Thanks again for all the hard work that clearly goes into these beautiful posts.
