Every summer, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale gives us something to look forward to, and given what we have been living through, you would think this sale would be a welcome distraction. Yet, this year it feels different, almost weird. Shopping for clothes is at the bottom of most people’s lists. Many are unsure of what their wardrobe needs will look like in the coming season. That paired with the economic instability many Americans are feeling, even at sale prices, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale seems to be lacking the hoopla it normally gets.

On the other hand, COVID has offered us tremendous clarity on what’s important along with a desire to simplify our lives. Could it be that even during a huge sale, the pandemic has encouraged us to shop more responsibly than years past? If you look hard enough in any tragedy, there are always some blessings and good things lurking around. The fashion business has been hit hard by COVID but it has also been forced to take its own inventory on how it has been delivering merchandise to consumers. We may not be mindlessly loading up our online carts like we have during past sales but that doesn’t mean we’re not shopping. COVID has sharpened our shopping focus and we’re buying the things we need, not just what we want.

That said, I have shopped the sale and made my selections. August 4, 2020, running until August 30. But it’s only open to the general public from August 19 – 30. For some of you, you will have to wait until later in the month to make your buys. But that doesn’t mean you have to wait to preview. With the sale being made available to shoppers in four tiers, you can check out this Forbes article that outlines who can shop when.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2020 Shopping Picks

Not surprisingly, I found less to highlight this year than I have during the past Nordstrom Anniversary Sales, but I was still able to find some great things. What I love most about this sale is much of the merchandise is new vs. being markdowns from the current season and it’s fun to look at things like coats and sweaters while getting respite from the heat with air conditioning. It also makes me strangely hopeful that by the time we can actually wear these things, the world will be in a better place. One can only hope.
