I have bulbous thighs.  I’m not shaming my body, it just is what it is. We get some physical features we like and others we’d trade in a heartbeat.  During the summer, thigh chafing is very real. Wearing skirts and dresses in the summer without thigh protection could basically light a fire between the legs from all the friction.  Yet, it’s not dresses and skirts I want to talk about in regards to thigh chafing because, by this point, we all know about slip shorts that were designed to help with that dastardly chafe.

THIGH CHAFING WHEN WEARING PANTS AND SHORTS

What I want to speak about today is when you get thigh rub when you wear pants or shorts.  I know it sounds weird.  How can someone get chafed thighs when either of these bottoms because, after all, it’s the legs of these pants and shorts that protect it from happening? But, not always.  We’re in a time of swooshy, wide-leg, easy pants,  and when pants have a wider leg they need to have a longer crotch which, as a result, leaves a delicate part of the inner thighs exposed and open to chafing.  I remember this from my fashion design school patternmaking class days where there was some sort of equation of how much a crotch has to be dropped for however wide a pant leg is.

YES, THESE SOLUTIONS WILL ALSO WORK WHEN YOU WEAR SKIRTS AND DRESSES

Of course, the non-slip shorts solutions I am offering for thigh chafe can absolutely be used when wearing skirts or dresses, however, I wanted to specifically talk about this topic from a pants and shorts perspective because in these situations, slip shorts are off the table.  I mean, I guess you could wear slip shorts with pants, but who the heck would want to?  On a hot day?  Um, no thanks.  So, instead, these anti-chafing solutions are not just perfect for skirts and dresses, they will work for pants and shorts when the upper thighs need protecting.

Your best solution is an anti-chafing type stick that will protect your skin against rubbing that causes chafing, irritation, and raw skin.  Bonus if the chafing stick also helps soothe the skin that becomes irritated.  There are many of these types of sticks on the market and best of all, they can be used for other areas of the body where you might experience chafing, like under the breasts, your arms, or even in a pinch if you feel a blister coming on.  I am featuring a few brands that sell products that will help against thigh chafing below.

DRUGSTORE FAVORITES

Let’s start with some well-known drugstore brands that you know well but may not know they offer chafing products.

MONISTAT CARE CHAFING RELIEF

Monistat Care Chafing Relief

Everybody in the free world associates Monistat with yeast infections, but Monistat makes an excellent anti-chafing product.  A friend of mine who owned a plus-size boutique for years used to recommend this product to all of her customers and I gave it a try once and totally understand why she did.  Unlike chafing sticks that go on like deodorants or balms, Monistat Care Chafing Relief is a gel that dries as a powder. The gel combines the protective benefits of lotion and powder; this feminine care gel is non-greasy, fragrance-free, and dries clear, so it doesn’t stain. Shop.

BAN BODY THIGH AND ANTI-CHAFING STICK

Ban body Thigh and body rub remedy

Until I did some research, I had no idea Ban made an anti-chafing stick.  It does stand to reason, however, because if you’re ever in a situation where you have unexpected thigh chafing and nothing on hand to stop it, your deodorant can step in as an anti-chafing product.  Ban’s Body Thigh and Ant-Chafing stick uses tapioca starch to absorb moisture, and aloe vera and calendula to soothe skin and is free of baking soda, talc, oil, parabens, phosphate, phthalate, dyes, alcohol, and gluten. GOLD BOND FRICTION DEFENSE STICK

Gold Bond Friction Defense

Gold Bond has been healing a multitude of skin issues for years so it makes sense that they too have an anti-chafing stick.  Like all Gold Bond products, the easy application stick moisturizes and soothes the skin while reducing friction is non-greasy, unscented, and gentle on sensitive skin. Kinfield All Start Anti-chafe balm

ALREADY CHAFING?  HOW TO GET RELIEF

While many of these products claim to soothe as well as protect, if you are in a situation where you’re already chafing and don’t have any of them to help bring relief, here are some home remedies that will help tame the pain and redness:

After cleansing your skin, allow the area to air dry before applying any products.  If you have open sores, avoid

  • Aloe Vera: Can help reduce the irritation and inflammation caused by chafing
  • Petroleum Jelly: Can reduce irritation and also prevent future chafing
  • Coconut Oil: Alleviates irritation and assists with wound healing
  • Cornstarch: Absorbs extra moisture, reduces itchiness, and can be used as a substitute for talcum powder
  • Shea Butter: High in fatty acids to smooth and also has inflammatory properties
  • A&D Ointment: Moisturizers and seals the skin while aiding in healing
  • Corticosteroid Creams: For stronger treatments when needed
