Who doesn’t love a good sale? Scoring something below retail feels like unlocking a secret level of adulthood. To this day, when I get a deep discount on something, I still text my mom like I just discovered the cure for cancer. The thrill is real.

But sales, especially big ones like the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, can also lure us into buying things we don’t need, don’t love, or won’t wear. That’s why I always pair my sale picks with a few reality checks. Because while I am sharing items I think are worth your attention (and yes, I do earn a small commission when you shop through my links), I want you to shop in a way that’s smart, intentional, and ultimately satisfying. Not overwhelming. Not regret-inducing. Not “what was I thinking?”

So before you dive into cart-filling mode, let’s talk strategy. I’ve included shopping tips between each section of selections of our picks so you can reflect as you scroll.

1. BROWSE FIRST, THEN STRATEGIZE

Start by browsing. Scroll. Wander. Get inspired. Let the sale jog your memory—“oh right, I need new bras!”—but resist the urge to buy just yet.

Unlike most sales that are a graveyard of past-season leftovers, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is a preview of the upcoming season, offered temporarily at discounted prices. Treat this like reconnaissance. Soak it in before you start making decisions.

DRESSES

2. TAKE A MACRO VIEW OF YOUR WARDROBE

Before adding anything to your cart, step back and think big picture: What’s the overall direction of your wardrobe right now? What’s working? What’s not?

Most of my clients come to me with wardrobes that lack cohesion because they’ve never paused to take a wide-angle view. When you shop with a macro lens, you’ll start making decisions that create a more connected, intentional wardrobe, not a closet full of lone wolves.

BLAZERS

3. MAKE A THOUGHTFUL PLAN

Once you’ve browsed and gotten your bearings, ask yourself:

  • What will I wear this with?
  • Can I style it three different ways with what I already own?
  • Does this fill a true gap or just duplicate something I have?
  • Is this a seasonal refresh or a style detour?
  • Will it replace something that’s worn out?
  • What, if anything, would I need to make this piece useful?

If you’re just throwing stuff into your cart hoping something sticks, pause. You deserve better than spaghetti-shopping.

TOPS

4. ASSESS VALUE— BEYOND PRICE

It’s not just about the sale price. It’s about time, wear, and return on investment. Will this piece streamline your mornings? Get real use? Or is it just adding to the decision fatigue?

Before you buy, ask: Is this worth the space, the maintenance, and the mental load?

VESTS

5. INDULGE, THEN EDIT

Let yourself go wild. Add everything you love to your cart—no judgment. It’s a bit like trying on identities in a fitting room. Have fun with it.

Then walk away.

Come back later with a clearer head and a red pen. Look for patterns in what you added. What colors repeat? What silhouettes dominate? What does your fantasy cart reveal about where your style is heading?

Edit ruthlessly. Fantasy is fun, but satisfaction lives in smart edits.

PANTS

6.  DON’T BUY JUST BECAUSE IT’S ON SALE

We’ve all done it. The “I wouldn’t pay full price for this, but at this price…” trap. If you wouldn’t want it at full price, ask yourself why. If the only answer is “because it’s cheap,” that’s not a good enough reason.

Low cost doesn’t automatically equal high value.

SWEATERS AND CARDIGANS

7.  AVOID WISHFUL WARDROBING

Wishful Wardrobing is buying for a life you don’t actually live. You know what I mean—those heels for the gala you’re not attending, the yoga pants for the class you haven’t taken, the jumpsuit that’s adorable until you need to pee with a toddler on your hip.

Admiration isn’t a reason to buy. Utility is. Buy for your real life—not the imaginary one you hope will show up if you just own the outfit.

HANDBAGS

8.  WATCH OUT FOR SPLITTING YOUR WEARS

Buying multiples of the same type of item—like six similar cardigans or five pairs of black pants—doesn’t expand your options. It dilutes them.

If you already have three pairs of black trousers that do the job, a fourth one (no matter how discounted) just spreads the wear too thin and undercuts the value of all of them.

Think of it like opening a nail salon on a block with five others. The market’s already saturated. The return just isn’t there.

SKIRTS

9.  PAY ATTENTION TO FABRIC AND CARE

Sales are seductive. But if something is dry-clean only and you avoid dry cleaning like the plague? Skip it. Same for fabrics that itch, snag, wrinkle, or make you sweat buckets.

Make sure you’re not just buying something you love—but something you’ll actually maintain.

SHOES

10.  DON’T LET THE CLOCK CREATE PANIC

Limited-time offers. Countdown timers. Early access tiers. All designed to trigger FOMO.

But buying something mediocre just because it might sell out? That’s not a strategy. Take a beat. Let urgency pass. If it’s meant to be, it will be in your size when you return with a clear head.

ACCESSORIES

11.  BE HONEST ABOUT FUTURE YOU

Will Future You hem those pants? Return that extra size? Break in those too-stiff boots?

Spoiler: Future You is probably just as busy and distracted as Present You. Shop for the person you actually are, not the superhuman version you wish you could be.

COATS AND JACKETS

12.   WATCH FOR SEASONAL BLINDNESS

Because the sale happens in July, it’s easy to buy things for now instead of later. You either load up on cozy things you won’t wear for three months or summer stuff that won’t be useful come September.

Remember: this is a fall preview sale. Buy with the upcoming season in mind.

LINGERIE, SLEEP, AND LOUNGEWEAR

13.  AUDIT BEFORE YOU ADD

Before clicking “add to cart” on another black turtleneck or beige bootie, peek into your closet. Use the sale as a checkpoint.

New rule: if something goes in, something else comes out. Keep your closet from swelling with duplicates.

WORKOUT

14.  SET A BUDGET, AND STICK TO IT

Even the most responsible women get swept up in the Sale Siren Song. Give yourself a cap before you even open the Nordstrom app.

Better yet, break it into categories: $150 for shoes, $100 for layering pieces, $75 for a wildcard. Structure allows for freedom—without the hangover.
