A couple weeks ago, I wrote about the annual disconnect between what fashion offers for summer and what professional women actually need. The racks may be screaming “vacation mode,” but your calendar isn’t. You can read the post here.
If that post hit home, this one’s your follow-up: five outfits that actually work when you do.
Each one is built for a different kind of summer workday—from big meetings to desk days, from client visits to casual Fridays. They’re structured without being stuffy, polished without being precious, and designed to keep you cool, comfortable, and fully in charge—even when the weather has other plans.
Because summer dressing shouldn’t feel like a compromise. And you shouldn’t have to choose between sweat, style, and credibility.
1. THE MEETING MARATHONER

For the days when you’re running the room—not melting under pressure (or into your seat).
This dress from M.M. LaFleur strikes the ideal balance: it’s got ease and breathability, but the classic banker stripe keeps it grounded in professionalism. It reads sharp and structured, even though it wears like a breeze.
I paired it with the cropped cardigan from Akris Punto—a longtime client favorite. Yes, it’s an investment, but because Akris keeps this piece in rotation, it’s also a great one to stalk on resale sites. It’s light, clean, and won’t fight the silhouette of the dress underneath.
The nude pumps are from Ally Shoes, a brand I’ve recommended before and continue to love for their comfort-first approach to classic silhouettes. Perfect for full days when you need to walk the walk and the talk.
Accessories include a pair of sculptural gold earrings and a chunky gold bracelet from Kenneth Jay Lane. And here’s your styling PSA: bracelets worn to work should never be noisy. If your jewelry announces your arrival before you do, it’s not the power move you think it is.
Why it works: It’s structured enough to command attention, but breathable and soft enough to keep you focused on your work—not your waistband. With classic elements and a modern silhouette, this is power dressing without the power struggle.
2. THE CASUAL COMMAND CENTER

For the days when you’re calling the shots from behind the scenes—WFH, coworking, or just not in the mood for a waistband revolt.
These navy wide-leg Pinnacle Pants by Athleta offer the holy grail: they look tailored but feel like leisurewear. The fabric moves with you, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and holds its shape even after a long sit at your desk (or, let’s be real, cross-legged on the couch with your laptop).
Up top, I layered a striped tank with a punchy, short-sleeved cardigan. The cardigan adds structure and professionalism—especially helpful if you’re heading into a Zoom or a midday meeting—while the stripes keep things lively without reading too casual.
On your feet: Sarah Flint’s slip-on sneaker loafers. These aren’t your average comfort shoes. They’ve got a plush leather footbed and built-in anatomical arch support, which means you can stay on your feet without sacrificing style—or your arches.
Gold hoops with bright blue details finish the look with polish, proving you don’t need a blazer to look like you know exactly what you’re doing.
Why it works: It’s comfort masquerading as strategy—because it is. You’re working smarter and dressing smarter.
3. THE OUT-IN-THE-FIELD PRO

For when you’re not behind a desk—but still 100% in command.
This rust-orange shirt dress from Vince hits that rare sweet spot: crisp, structured, and practical without looking stiff. The tailored silhouette is refined, but thanks to the breathable fabric and subtle A-line shape, you won’t feel restricted as you move through your day.
I added a belt for shape and presence, and kept the rest of the palette grounded in neutrals. The woven flats from M.Gemi are soft, polished, and quiet—ideal for days when you’re covering ground but want to avoid anything too sneaker-y.
The structured top-handle bag from Demellier is a standout here. Elegant and understated, but with plenty of space for a tablet, notebook, or the random objects that magically appear when you’re the one holding it all together. It’s the kind of piece that says, I’m here to consult, not to carry your emotional labor—but I can do both.
Gold hoops round out the look with subtle authority.
Why it works: It’s functional, flattering, and boardroom-ready—even when the boardroom is a job site, a studio, or a client’s conference room.
4. THE POLISHED CREATIVE

For when you need to look like the adult in the room—but not the one who killed the mood.
This look is all about intentional ease—the kind of smart, low-effort authority that doesn’t rely on a matched set. Both the blazer and pants are from Argent, but they’re separates—so you’re not boxed into a full suit situation. The blazer is 100% linen, the pants a linen blend—each breathable and summer-appropriate, but structured enough to signal polish.
Instead of the expected button-up, I went with a sleek, breathable, sleeveless cotton top from M.M. Lafleur. It softens the tailoring and lets the accessories do a little of the heavy lifting. A simple tiger’s eye necklace, a slim belt, and a block-heel sandal from Margaux in warm leather finish the look with ease.
Perfect for office visits, creative pitches, or events where you want to look styled without trying too hard.
Why it works: It’s the modern power outfit—built from individual pieces that are versatile on their own, but quietly confident when pulled together.
5. THE QUIET POWER MOVE

For the days when you don’t need to prove anything—just show up and do what you do.
There’s something quietly commanding about a well-cut skirt and a knit top that doesn’t scream for attention. This look leans into that understated authority. Both the contrast-stitched skirt and ribbed polo-style knit top are from Me+Em, a brand that consistently nails modern structure with effortless polish.
The A-line skirt offers architectural shape and movement, while the collared knit adds softness with a subtle retro nod—ideal for when you want to feel styled but not overly styled. The mix is refined without being try-hard.
And yes, those are Nike Cortez sneakers—my personal favorite. They add a deliberate, fashion-forward edge without sacrificing comfort. One note: they run a little short, so I recommend going up half a size. Your toes will thank you.
A warm pair of gold earrings completes the look with just the right amount of polish.
Why it works: It’s thoughtful, confident, and intentionally unbothered. A modern-day power move that doesn’t rely on heels or hard edges.

Love #4. Right now I can think of several coming events that this would be perfect for. Thank you!
I no longer need office outfits but wow! I love all of these outfits and they work perfectly well with my lifestyle. That first dress is stunning and would work perfectly for me. Over 60, retired but love to look polished when out and about. The shoes….. great selection. Thank you
